The Call of Cthulhu

Assembled from the papers of a dead scholar, the story pieces together what no single mind was meant to hold. A sculptor's nightmares, a police raid on a swamp cult, and the log of a doomed ship all point to the same thing, a vast being that lies dreaming in the sunken city of R'lyeh beneath the Pacific, and to the cult that waits for the stars to come right so that it may wake.

When a quake lifts R'lyeh briefly to the surface, a crew of sailors meets Cthulhu face to face, and only one survives to tell it. The tale that gave the Mythos its name set out its central dread, that humanity is a brief accident in a cosmos owned by sleeping things, and that our reprieve lasts only as long as they do not stir. The Archive raises it as 'R'lyeh Rising', a swing built on a city coming up out of the sea.
