The Colour Out of Space

A meteorite falls on a farm west of Arkham, and what it carries is not a substance any chemist can name. It glows in a colour that is not quite a colour, dims the stars, and will not cool. Over a single year it seeps into the well, the soil and the Gardner family, bleaching crops to grey ash, bending the fruit to beautiful poison, and drawing the living slowly down into brittle madness.

The land dies by inches while the thing in the water feeds and, at last, lifts away, leaving one patch of blasted heath that still spreads a little wider each year. Lovecraft called it his own favourite, and its horror is not a monster but a wrongness in the physics of a place, a contamination with no cure and no motive the mind can hold. The Archive sets it as a slow blues, the dread of a thing that poisons the water and waits.
