Cthulhu

Cthulhu is the great priest and figurehead of Lovecraft's whole cosmos, a vast being of the stars who lies dead and dreaming in the sunken city of R'lyeh beneath the Pacific. He is not a god to be worshipped so much as a weather system that happens to have a shape, part dragon, part octopus, part mountain, waiting for the stars to come right so that he may rise and the world may be remade in his image.
His cult never sleeps even while he does, chanting the phrase every reader of the weird now knows, and his brief wakings leave madness and drowned sailors in their wake. More than any single tale, Cthulhu gave the Mythos its name and its posture toward humanity: patient, indifferent, and far too large to fight. The Archive raises him in swing, a city coming up out of the sea.
