The Jersey Devil

For three hundred years the Pine Barrens of southern New Jersey have been home to the Jersey Devil, a winged, hoofed, horse-headed thing said to be the cursed thirteenth child of Mother Leeds, born in 1735 and flown up the chimney into the pines. Sightings have come in waves ever since, peaking in a January week of 1909 when the creature was reported across the whole Delaware Valley and schools and factories closed.
It is one of America's oldest and most durable legends, a devil bred of colonial dread and a vast dark forest that still swallows the unwary. A Man of Coastal Sorrow carries its song among the cryptid sides.
